Tobacco, scientifically known as Nicotiana tabacum L., is a plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Originally discovered by Indigenous peoples in North and South America, tobacco later became an important cash crop cultivated worldwide.
In Thailand, tobacco is cultivated from the upper to the lower northern regions, as well as in certain areas of the northeastern region, requiring a warm climate and fertile, well-drained soil.
The curing method varies depending on the type of tobacco grown, and each method produces tobacco with distinct characteristics:
Hung in well-ventilated barns for 4-8 weeks. Results in low sugar, mild sweet flavor with high nicotine content.
Heat-cured without direct smoke contact. Takes about one week, producing high sugar content tobacco for cigarettes.
40% of global production. High sugar content with sweet flavor and distinctive aroma.
Air-cured tobacco with mild flavor and high nicotine content.
Sun-cured tobacco with unique aromatic properties.
